Free Online shed designer

Design your shed in minutes. Every board counted.

Drag the walls to size, place the doors and windows and pick the roof. The Shed Planner frames every wall, checks the spans and counts every board and sheet, free on screen. When you are ready to build, the builder's plan for your exact design is $29, and 20 popular sizes come as free plans.

Try it yourself
Demo of the shed designer: a cursor drags the shed from 8' x 8' to 12' wide, raises the walls to 9' 1-1/8", makes it 10' deep, adds a window and snaps it to the middle of the wall, paints it barn red and turns the view, while the board and sheet count updates.

  • Spans checked for your snow load

How it works

Three steps from idea to lumber yard

  1. 8x10 gable, 80 sq ft

    Step 1: Set the size

Pick a common size or type your own width and depth. Choose gable or lean-to, the pitch and the wall height, and watch the 3D view follow.

  2. Front wall, 1 opening framed

    Step 2: Place the openings

Add a single or double door and up to four windows. Headers, king studs, jacks and cripples are framed for you, on layout from the corner.

  3. 94 boards, 6.7% offcut

    Step 3: Get the plan

The free summary has the dimensions, the span checks and the materials list. The builder's plan, $29 once, adds every wall dimensioned, every cut on a board and the step-by-step.

What you get

A shopping list that fits the rack

Framing is packed onto 8, 10, 12 and 16 ft boards, and trim comes in 8, 12 and 16 ft, with short pieces sharing a board when they fit whole. For the 8x10 that is 94 boards with 6.7% offcut, including 49 8 ft 2x4s, and one 4x8 siding panel covers each 4 ft of wall with no horizontal seam.

Spans checked, not guessed

Rafters, floor joists and headers are checked in bending and deflection for Spruce-Pine-Fir No. 2 at the snow load you choose, with the deflection limits and nail counts from the 2021 IRC tables. A 2x6 rafter at 16" can span about 11' 11-1/8" at 30 psf; this roof needs 3' 11-1/4".
